zoning code
Property use regulations
A zoning code is the set of local laws that regulate how land can be used in different areas of a city or county.
It divides territory into zones—residential, commercial, industrial—and specifies what can be built where, how tall structures may be, how far they must sit from property lines, and how much parking is required.
Developers, architects, and property owners consult zoning codes to determine what's permitted on a given parcel: The zoning code won't allow a restaurant in that neighborhood.
