women's universities
All-female higher education
Women's universities are institutions of higher education that admit only female students.
They emerged in the 19th century when most universities excluded women, providing access to degrees and professional training.
Many have since become coeducational, but some persist as single-sex institutions, often emphasizing leadership development and women's advancement: She attended one of the Seven Sisters women's universities.
