winter cover

Cold weather shield

Winter cover refers to materials or plants used to protect soil, crops, or other surfaces during cold months.

In agriculture, a winter cover crop—like rye or clover—prevents erosion, suppresses weeds, and adds nutrients to soil: We planted winter cover to keep the field from washing away.

The term also applies to protective coverings for pools, boats, or outdoor furniture stored through winter.
