went viral

Went viral describes content—a video, image, post, or story—that spread rapidly across the internet through sharing, reaching a massive audience in a short time: The video of the cat went viral overnight.

The metaphor compares digital sharing to how viruses spread from person to person.

Something can go viral intentionally through marketing or accidentally through sheer appeal or absurdity.
