watchdog agencies
Government accountability bodies
Watchdog agencies are organizations that monitor other institutions—usually governments, corporations, or industries—for misconduct, inefficiency, or abuse of power.
They may be governmental bodies like inspectors general, or independent nonprofits scrutinizing public officials.
The watchdog metaphor suggests alertness and readiness to bark warnings: Consumer watchdog agencies flagged the misleading advertising.
