walking beat
Cop's regular path
A walking beat is a police officer's patrol route covered on foot rather than by vehicle.
The term evokes traditional neighborhood policing, where officers become familiar with local residents and businesses: He's been on the same walking beat for fifteen years.
Officers assigned this way are said to walk a beat or pound the pavement.
