walk about

Stroll with no destination

Walkabout (usually one word) refers to a journey on foot, especially one with spiritual or reflective purpose.

The term comes from Australian Aboriginal culture, where it describes a young person's extended solo journey through the wilderness as a rite of passage.

In broader use, it means any period of wandering or traveling without fixed destination: He went on walkabout for a few months to clear his head.

British English uses walkabout for a politician or celebrity's informal stroll among crowds.
