urinary catheterization
Tube-assisted bladder emptying
Urinary catheterization is the insertion of a thin tube through the urethra into the bladder to drain urine.
The procedure is performed when patients cannot urinate normally, need accurate urine output measurement, or require bladder emptying during surgery.
A catheter may remain in place for extended periods (indwelling) or be inserted briefly and removed (intermittent): The nurse performed urinary catheterization before the operation.
