urban infill
Building between buildings
Urban infill is development on vacant or underused land within existing urban areas rather than on undeveloped land at the city's edge.
The strategy increases density, makes use of existing infrastructure, and counters suburban sprawl: The city encouraged urban infill to revitalize downtown.
Also called simply infill.
