unique identifiers

One-of-a-kind labels

Unique identifiers are codes or values that distinguish one item from all others in a system.

Social Security numbers identify individuals, ISBNs identify books, and IP addresses identify devices on a network.

The key property is uniqueness—no two items share the same identifier: Each product in our database has a unique identifier.

In computing, UUIDs (universally unique identifiers) generate random strings virtually guaranteed to be one-of-a-kind.
