underact
Mute one's portrayal
To underact is to perform with insufficient emotion or energy, delivering a restrained performance where more intensity is called for.
The opposite of overacting.
A director might complain that an actor is underacting a dramatic scene, failing to convey the character's passion.
Sometimes underacting is deliberate—a subtle, naturalistic style that trusts the material.
