Unadoptable describes someone or something that cannot or will not be adopted.
The term applies most often to children in foster care deemed unlikely to find permanent families—typically because of age, disability, or behavioral issues: The shelter had a wing for unadoptable teenagers.
It also describes animals at shelters: The rescue specializes in unadoptable dogs.
The label is sometimes contested as stigmatizing or prematurely limiting.
