toxic relationships
Damaging intimate connections
Toxic relationships are connections—romantic, familial, or otherwise—characterized by patterns of harm, manipulation, or emotional damage.
The toxicity may involve control, constant criticism, dishonesty, or disregard for boundaries.
The term gained popular use in the early 21st century as people began naming unhealthy dynamics more explicitly: I finally recognized I was in a toxic relationship.
Unlike ordinary conflict, toxic patterns persist and erode well-being over time.
