A tornado watch is an alert issued by weather services when atmospheric conditions are favorable for tornado formation in a given area.
Unlike a tornado warning, which means a tornado has been spotted or detected, a watch signals elevated risk: A tornado watch has been issued for the central counties until 9 PM.
The plural watches refers either to multiple alerts or to the ongoing monitoring itself.
