three-second violation
Paint overstay penalty
A three-second violation is a basketball infraction called when an offensive player remains in the painted area near the basket (the key or lane) for more than three consecutive seconds.
The rule prevents players from camping under the basket for easy shots: The ref called a three-second violation on the center.
The NBA also enforces a defensive three-second violation against defenders lingering in the lane without guarding anyone.
