talked past
Failed to connect
Talked past describes a failure of communication where people address different points without engaging each other's actual arguments or concerns.
Two people talking past each other may use the same words but mean different things, or may be so focused on their own position that they never truly respond to what the other is saying: We argued for an hour but just talked past each other the whole time.
