take a pitch
Don't swing bat
In baseball, to take a pitch is to let a pitched ball pass without swinging.
A batter might take a pitch to study the pitcher's delivery, work the count, or because the pitch is outside the strike zone: He took the first pitch for a strike.
Coaches sometimes instruct batters to take on certain counts.
