sunset clauses
Built-in termination dates
Sunset clauses are provisions in laws or contracts that automatically terminate the legislation or agreement after a specified date unless renewed.
They force periodic review, preventing outdated rules from persisting indefinitely: The surveillance law contains a sunset clause requiring reauthorization every five years.
Also called sunset provisions.
