subordinators
Clause-linking words
Subordinators are words that introduce dependent clauses and connect them to main clauses, creating complex sentences.
Common subordinators include *because*, *although*, *if*, *when*, *while*, and *that*.
They signal that what follows cannot stand alone as a complete thought: Although she was tired, she finished the project.
The term is used mainly in grammar instruction and linguistics as an alternative to *subordinating conjunctions*.
