straw purchase
Buying for another
A straw purchase is a transaction where one person buys something on behalf of another who is unable or unwilling to make the purchase themselves, typically to circumvent legal restrictions.
The term appears most often in connection with firearms, where it's illegal for someone to buy a gun for a person prohibited from owning one.
It also applies to vehicle purchases made to help someone avoid taxes or hide assets.
He was convicted of making a straw purchase for his brother, a convicted felon.
