star sapphires
Rays within gems
Star sapphires are a variety of sapphire that display asterism—a star-shaped pattern of light that appears to glide across the stone's surface when viewed under a direct light source.
This optical effect, typically showing a six-rayed star, results from needle-like inclusions of rutile within the crystal structure.
The most prized specimens show a sharp, well-centered star against a richly colored blue or pink background.
The star sapphire in her ring seemed to glow from within.
