squawk box
Workplace intercom system
A squawk box is an intercom or loudspeaker system, especially one used for one-way announcements in offices, trading floors, or aircraft.
The term suggests the tinny, harsh quality of the audio: The squawk box crackled with the captain's voice.
On Wall Street, squawk boxes broadcast market updates and trading calls in real time.
