society columnists
Elite event reporters
Society columnists are journalists who cover the social activities of wealthy, prominent, or fashionable people—their parties, weddings, charity galas, and personal affairs.
The beat was more prominent in earlier eras when newspapers devoted regular space to tracking who attended what event and who was seen with whom: The society columnist noted which debutantes had made the most advantageous matches that season.
