snow effect

Frosty visual illusion

Snow effect refers to the visual static or interference pattern resembling falling snow on older television screens, caused by weak signal or no signal at all.

The random white and black dots flickering across the screen created a characteristic fuzzy appearance: We couldn't get reception, just snow effect.

The term extends to intentional visual effects in media that simulate snowfall, and to similar noise patterns in photography or digital imaging.
