snow bands
Localized blizzard strips
Snow bands are elongated areas of heavy snowfall within a larger storm system, typically producing intense, localized accumulation while adjacent areas receive much less.
Lake-effect snow bands form when cold air crosses warmer lake water, creating narrow corridors of persistent snowfall: The snow band parked over Buffalo for hours, dumping three feet.
Meteorologists track these bands because they can drop snow at rates of several inches per hour.
