Sitting in on is attending something as an observer rather than a participant.
You might sit in on a class, a meeting, or a rehearsal to watch and listen without taking an active role: I sat in on a few lectures before deciding to enroll.
In music, sitting in means joining a performance as a guest: A legendary saxophonist sat in on the second set.
