side plot
Tangential narrative thread
A side plot is a secondary storyline that runs alongside the main narrative in a novel, film, or other work.
It typically involves supporting characters or explores themes that complement the central action without dominating it: The side plot about her brother's gambling debts added tension to the romance.
Also called a subplot.
