short term memory
Recent event retention
Short term memory is the mental capacity to hold small amounts of information briefly—typically seconds to minutes—before it fades or transfers to long-term storage.
It's what lets you remember a phone number just long enough to dial it: My short term memory is shot; I walked into the kitchen and forgot why.
Also called working memory, though specialists distinguish between them.
