shock to the system

Sudden overwhelming change

A shock to the system is something that jolts you out of a familiar state—physically, emotionally, or mentally.

The phrase often describes sudden changes that require adjustment: Going back to work after vacation was a real shock to the system.

It can be negative (a health scare, cold weather) or bracing in a good way: The morning swim was a shock to the system, but I felt great afterward.
