sheltered workshop
Protected vocational facility
A sheltered workshop is a supervised workplace for people with disabilities, offering employment in a controlled environment with support services.
These facilities typically provide simple assembly or packaging tasks at below-minimum wages, justified as vocational training.
The model has grown controversial, with critics arguing it segregates disabled workers rather than integrating them into mainstream employment: The advocacy group pushed to close sheltered workshops in favor of competitive integrated employment.
