shell-shocking
Causing combat trauma
Shell-shocking is the act of causing severe psychological distress, or the experience of being overwhelmed by traumatic events.
From the World War I term for combat-induced psychological breakdown, it now describes any situation that leaves someone stunned or mentally overwhelmed: The sudden layoffs were shell-shocking to the entire department.
The adjective shell-shocked is more common.
