shank it
Hit the hosel
To shank it is to badly mishit a ball, especially in golf, where the ball flies wildly off course after striking the hosel rather than the clubface: I shanked it into the woods on the fifth hole.
The term extends to other sports for any embarrassingly poor shot or kick.
A shank is the mishit itself.
