samba schools
Brazilian parade groups
Samba schools are Brazilian community organizations that prepare elaborate performances for Carnival, particularly Rio de Janeiro's famous parade competition.
Despite the name, they function less as schools than as neighborhood-based clubs where members spend months choreographing dances, designing costumes, building floats, and rehearsing original samba compositions called *enredos*.
Each school represents a different district and competes for prestige in televised parades that draw massive audiences.
The samba school from Mangueira won this year's competition.
