Romance fraud is a scam in which someone cultivates a fake romantic relationship to extract money from the victim.
The fraudster typically operates through dating sites or social media, building trust over weeks or months before inventing emergencies requiring funds: She lost her savings to a romance fraud after sending money to someone she'd never met in person.
