role confusion

Unclear expected behavior

Role confusion is uncertainty about one's identity, purpose, or place in social relationships.

The term appears most often in developmental psychology, where it describes the adolescent struggle to form a coherent sense of self: Teenagers experiencing role confusion may try on different personas.

More broadly, it can describe uncertainty in any context where expectations are unclear—workplace hierarchies, family dynamics, or new social situations: The restructuring created role confusion among managers.
