retcons
Retroactive continuity changes
Retcons are retroactive continuities—changes to previously established facts in a fictional narrative.
Writers retcon when they alter backstory, resurrect dead characters, or rewrite events to fit new plotlines: The sequel retconned his death as a faked disappearance.
The term originated in comics fandom but now applies to any serialized fiction.
Fans use it critically when changes feel forced or contradictory.
