retail tax
Store checkout charge
A retail tax is a tax collected at the point of sale when goods or services are purchased by the final consumer.
Unlike taxes applied at earlier stages of production or distribution, retail taxes fall on the end buyer: The retail tax added eight percent to my purchase.
Sales tax is the most common form in the United States, though the term retail tax sometimes distinguishes taxes on final sales from wholesale or value-added taxes applied at multiple stages.
