relaxation response
Body's unwinding reflex
The relaxation response is the body's physiological counterpart to the stress response—a measurable state of lowered heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension triggered by practices like meditation, deep breathing, or prayer.
The term was coined by cardiologist Herbert Benson in the 1970s: Twenty minutes of meditation activates the relaxation response.
