recycling fees
Reprocessing cost additions
Recycling fees are charges added to the purchase price of certain products—electronics, appliances, tires, mattresses—to fund their eventual recycling or disposal.
The fee appears at checkout: The TV cost $400 plus a $25 recycling fee.
Some jurisdictions call them environmental handling fees or e-waste fees.
The idea is to build disposal costs into the purchase rather than burden taxpayers or let items end up in landfills.
