rain squall
Brief violent rain
A rain squall is a sudden, intense burst of wind accompanied by heavy rain, typically lasting only minutes before passing.
Squalls arrive with little warning and can be violent enough to endanger small boats or catch travelers off guard: We ducked under an awning when the rain squall hit.
The term appears most often in maritime and weather contexts.
