quean

Woman of ill-repute

Quean is an archaic word for a woman, now obsolete except in historical contexts or deliberate archaism.

In earlier centuries it often carried negative connotations—a disreputable woman, a hussy, or a prostitute.

The word is easily confused with queen, from which it differs in spelling and origin.

The old ballad spoke of tavern queans and soldiers.
