pussy willows

Soft spring catkins

Pussy willows are the soft, fuzzy catkins of certain willow trees, appearing in early spring before the leaves.

The silvery-gray buds resemble tiny cat paws, hence the name.

Children often collect branches bearing these catkins: We brought pussy willows home from the marsh.

The term also refers to the shrubs or small trees that produce them.
