A proprietary blend is a mixture of ingredients whose exact proportions are kept secret by the manufacturer.
The term appears most often on supplement labels, where companies list ingredients without revealing how much of each the product contains.
This allows manufacturers to protect formulas from competitors—but also lets them hide that a product contains mostly cheap fillers with trace amounts of expensive active ingredients.
The label showed a proprietary blend of herbs, but there was no way to know the actual dosages.
