private language

Personally invented tongue

Private language in philosophy refers to a hypothetical language whose terms can only be understood by the speaker—typically one describing inner sensations accessible to no one else.

Wittgenstein's private language argument contends that such a language is impossible, since meaning requires public criteria for correct use.

More loosely, private language describes any idiosyncratic vocabulary shared by intimates: The twins had their own private language.
