primary forests
Untouched ancient woodlands
Primary forests are forests that have never been logged or significantly altered by human activity, retaining their original ecological structure and biodiversity.
They represent ecosystems in their natural state, undisturbed by industrial development.
Also called old-growth forests or virgin forests, they are increasingly rare and considered irreplaceable for conservation: Less than a third of the world's forests qualify as primary forest.
