pork-barrelling

Funding for votes

Pork-barrelling is the practice of directing government funds to local projects primarily to win political favor with constituents.

A politician who secures a new highway or military base for their district is pork-barrelling—the benefit to voters matters more than national priority.

The term is almost always pejorative: Critics accused the senator of shameless pork-barrelling.

Also spelled pork barreling.
