population estimates
Approximate people counts
Population estimates are calculated approximations of how many people live in a given area at a given time.
Unlike census counts, which attempt to count every person directly, estimates use statistical methods to project population between census years or for areas where direct counting is impractical: The UN's population estimates for 2024, population estimates for rural counties.
Demographers distinguish estimates (present or past figures) from projections (future predictions).
