Pompom girls are cheerleaders or dance squad members who perform with pompoms—the fluffy spherical decorations shaken during routines.
The term sometimes distinguishes sideline performers from competitive cheerleaders who do stunts and tumbling: The pompom girls led the crowd in cheers during halftime.
