pissing war
Pointless competitive squabble
A pissing war is a petty conflict where opponents try to outdo each other, often escalating pointlessly over trivial stakes.
The image comes from animals (and men) marking territory by urinating.
Also called a pissing contest or pissing match: The budget meeting devolved into a pissing war between department heads.
