part of the furniture

Always been there

Someone or something so long-established in a place that they seem to belong there permanently, like the fixtures themselves.

The phrase usually describes a person who has been around so long they're taken for granted: After twenty years at the company, Dave was part of the furniture.

It can suggest comfortable familiarity or, less kindly, irrelevance.
